Suffern does not allow dumpsters in the street. The container goes on your driveway, which is where we put it anyway, on boards. Suffern does ask for a permit even on private property, from the Building Inspector; we tell you what to file when you book. See every town's rule.
Time limit on the street or property: A dumpster of 2 cubic yards or more may sit up to 14 days in any 180-day period without a permit; beyond that a Building Inspector permit is required and authorizes up to 90 additional days. No permit needed if the dumpster is used under an active building permit for the property. Max capacity 30 cubic yards; one dumpster per one- or two-family lot; no new permit for the same lot for two years (unless ownership changes); permit must be displayed on the dumpster. Our standard 14-day rental fits inside most jobs; if yours runs longer, say so when you book.
Bulk pickup versus a dumpster. What Suffern collects at the curb: Village DPW collects bulk items on Monday or Tuesday coinciding with the normal garbage pickup day; construction debris rules not stated on the DPW page. Self-haul: Rockland Green Hillburn Transfer Station, 50 Baler Blvd, Hillburn — Mon-Fri 6:30am-4:30pm, Sat 6:30am-12pm. That works for a couch. A whole garage, a roof or a renovation is a container job.
Zoning Code (added by L.L. No. 1-2019): dumpster must be at least 5 ft from any side or rear property line; in no instance placed in a required front yard unless in a permitted driveway, nor in a public right-of-way or easement; may be used only for disposal, not storage; must be emptied or replaced when full. Violations apply to providers of such dumpsters as well as owners. The DPW's separate Right of Way Disturbance Permit covers water/sewer line and sidewalk work. Rockland County Dept. of Health waste hauler permit required for any vehicle hauling C&D debris.
Suffern's 2019 dumpster law is the most specific in Rockland: one container per home, 30-yard maximum, driveway only, and a Building Inspector permit once it has been on site more than 14 days.

Yes, even on your own driveway. Suffern requires a permit for a container on private property, issued by the Building Inspector, and does not allow containers in the street at all. We deal with this every week; tell us the address and we'll tell you what to file and where.

We put wood boards under the rails on every delivery, at no charge, and set the container down gently rather than dragging it. Asphalt, pavers, concrete and gravel drives in Suffern all get the same treatment. When we pick up, we sweep the spot.
