Homeowners call down a list and take the lowest number. We understand that; it is what we would do. The trouble is that dumpster quotes are not all measuring the same thing. One company's base price includes fourteen days and two tons; another's includes seven days and one ton and adds the rest at the end. Neither is lying. They are just quoting different rentals.
This guide does not list our prices, because we would rather you call and describe the job. It lists the questions that turn a quote into a total, so that whoever you call, you are comparing like with like.
The six questions that change the total
- How many days are included? Seven, ten and fourteen are all common. A cleanout that takes two weekends runs past a seven-day rental, and the daily fee after that is typically $10 to $20 a day. One regional company publishes $15 per day after its included period.
- How much weight is included, and what is the overage? Most base quotes include one ton. A bathroom gut, a roof or a garage full of old lumber can weigh more. Overage runs roughly $100 to $150 per ton across the market; the same regional company publishes $140. Ours is $130, and we tell you before you load whether your material is likely to hit it.
- Is driveway protection included? Some companies charge around $35 to put boards down. Some do not offer it. A container set on bare asphalt in July leaves marks that outlast the rental.
- Is there a fuel or environmental surcharge? These appear as a percentage or a flat fee on the invoice and are rarely mentioned in the phone quote. Ask.
- What if the truck cannot deliver or pick up? A blocked driveway, a car in the way, a container that is overfilled: many companies charge a trip fee for a wasted run. Reasonable, but ask what it is.
- Is there a fee to pay by card? Some companies pass card processing through. Ask before you hand over the number.
A worked example, no company named
Say two quotes come in for a garage and attic cleanout that will take you two weekends: one at a low base price with seven days and one ton, one a hundred dollars higher with fourteen days and two tons and boards included.
The cleanout runs nine days. That is two extra days on the first quote, call it $30. Old lumber, a workbench and a few hundred pounds of magazines put the load at about a ton and a half: half a ton of overage on the first quote, roughly $70. You asked for boards on the driveway: $35. Fuel surcharge on the invoice: $25.
The low quote is now $160 higher than it was on the phone, and $60 higher than the "expensive" one, which has not moved. This is not an unusual outcome. It is the usual one.
How to compare two quotes in one minute
Ask each company the same four things and write the answers side by side: days included, weight included, overage per ton, and whether boards and fuel are in the price. Then estimate your own job honestly: how many days, and is anything in it heavy. The quote that wins on the total is the one to take. If the company will not answer the four questions clearly on the phone, that is an answer too.
What we do about it
Fourteen days, 2,000 lb on the 12-yard and 4,000 lb on the 20, driveway boards on every delivery, sweep-up at pickup, and $25 off if we are late. Overage is $130 a ton and every fee is stated before you book. We put the terms in front of the price on purpose: they are what you are actually buying.

Is the cheapest dumpster quote ever actually the cheapest?
Sometimes, for a short, light job that finishes inside the included days and weight. For a cleanout or a renovation, the quote with more days and weight included is usually the lower total.
How do I know how much my debris weighs?
Describe the job to the company. Furniture and household junk are light; tile, plaster, roofing and wet material are heavy. Our size guide has rough numbers per material, and we will estimate on the phone.
Why do companies charge for driveway boards?
Boards take a few extra minutes per delivery and a company that runs on volume treats that as an add-on. We treat it as part of setting a container down properly.
